Ahead of the 2024 Africa University Games, the University of Lagos has confirmed that they are ready to host Africa. The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, claims that the institution is committed to the growth of sports on its campus.
Ogunsola is the first female Vice Chancellor of UNILAG since its establishment 60 years ago. Ogunsola told Punch that UNILAG will host the Federation of Africa University Sports in 2024, while speaking on the school’s targets in sports.
She said, “Other countries have collegiate athletes, and there are plans for us to have that here also, we are going to be hosting the FASU next year as our sports center has passed the requirements needed to host it.
“At the last NUGA Games, we totally developed our sports centre, and right now, we are working towards developing a sports hostel in that space which will be a 240-bed hostel for sportsmen and women. We have redone the indoor gym, the basketball courts, cricket fields, and everything is up to international standards.
“The swimming pool is now Olympic-size, so sports here is one of our most important focuses. What we also want to do now is develop the courses around sports like sports medicine, that is the next step for us. I am hoping that we will be able to interest some corporate organisations to have a sports academy because I think we have everything that it takes.”
