The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed a total of ₦20,075,050,006.55 to 192,906 students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria, The Positive Voice gathered.
According to updates from NELFUND’s official communication channels on Monday, the disbursement reflects the data as of January 1, 2025.
INSTITUTIONS WITH THE LARGEST DISBURSEMENTS:
Eniola Educational Consultant gathered that Bayero University, Kano, leads the beneficiary list with 11,683 students approved to receive a total of ₦1.3 billion. The University of Maiduguri follows with 12,198 students allocated ₦1.27 billion.
Other top beneficiaries include:
– University of Jos: ₦941 million for 6,988 students.
– Federal University Dutsin-Ma: ₦909 million for 8,978 students.
– University of Ibadan: ₦746 million for 4,907 students.
– Federal University Dutse: ₦593 million for 5,451 students.
– Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto: ₦578 million for 6,480 students.
– University of Lagos: ₦557 million for 3,685 students.
DISBURSEMENTS TO SMALLER INSTITUTIONS:
The Positive Voice also confirmed that some institutions with fewer applicants received smaller allocations, including:
– Gombe State Polytechnic, Bajoga: ₦122,000 for four students.
– Abia State Polytechnic: ₦106,300 for two students.
– Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe: ₦214,116 for three students.
– Kenule Benson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori:₦315,500 for seven students.
At Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, nine students will share ₦368,400, while 12 students at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, are set to receive ₦528,500.
Implications and Observations:
This massive funding initiative highlights NELFUND’s commitment to promoting education equity in Nigeria. However, disparities in allocations between larger universities and smaller institutions raise questions about accessibility for students in less prominent schools.
