TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY ASUU CALLS OFF STRIKE

After weeks of action that disrupted academic activities, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Taraba State University has officially ended its strike. This decision, announced by the union’s leadership on January 18, 2025, follows significant commitments from the Taraba State Government to address long-standing issues.

The strike, which commenced on December 5, 2024, was rooted in the state government’s delayed implementation of agreements dating back to 2014. These agreements included unresolved funding gaps, unpaid allowances, and discrepancies in pension policies. However, the breakthrough came after negotiations led to what ASUU describes as a “favorable resolution.”

Key outcomes of the agreement include an initial 10% disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), with subsequent monthly payments of 5% starting February 2025 until the backlog is fully cleared. The government has also committed to improving university funding in alignment with the Taraba State University Law, instituting a revised pension scheme, and ensuring the timely payment of salaries under the updated minimum wage structure.

ASUU chairman Dr. Joshua Mbaver lauded the collective efforts that brought the strike to an end. “This resolution was made possible through the dedication of ASUU National, the zonal leadership, and the TSU Congress. Their solidarity was instrumental in achieving these commitments,” he stated.

The union also expressed gratitude to Governor Agbu Kefas for his leadership and swift intervention, alongside the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the university administration, whose cooperation played a pivotal role.

“This outcome is a testament to the power of dialogue and mutual understanding,” Dr. Mbaver added while urging stakeholders to uphold their commitments to avoid future disruptions.

As academic activities resume, students and staff are optimistic about a more stable learning environment, with hopes that these resolutions will pave the way for sustained progress at Taraba State University.
