The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at Taraba State University has announced that its strike will continue until the full implementation of all its demands, similar to what has been agreed for other unions at the university.
This comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the same institution suspended its one-month strike following a commitment from the state government to address their concerns. However, SSANU, led by its State Chairperson and JAC Chairman, Comrade Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, stated that their strike will persist until all their issues, including unpaid salaries and promotion arrears, are resolved.
In a statement issued on Saturday from Jalingo, SSANU emphasized that while they acknowledged the efforts made by the state government concerning some demands, they would not resume work until the full payment of salaries for September and October 2022, as well as withheld portions of 2022 salaries, is made. Additionally, the union maintained its stance that the 2016 to 2020 promotion arrears must be paid as was done for other unions at the university.
The union rejected the government’s offer of N30 million for Earned Administrative Allowances (EAA), insisting that 50% of the total outstanding EAA, amounting to approximately N693 million, should be paid first, with the balance to follow within three months starting in February 2025.
SSANU also reiterated its objections to the retroactive application of appointment and promotion guidelines for senior non-academic staff, urging the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure that the 2020 guidelines be used for the upcoming 2023/2024 appraisal.
While SSANU acknowledged the state government’s approval and implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage and other allowances, it made it clear that their strike will continue until all demands are fully met.
