The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval for the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, located at Oferekpe in Ebonyi State. This approval marks the institution as Nigeria’s 66th state university and the 278th university within the Nigerian University System.
Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, the Executive Secretary of NUC, presented the recognition letter to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Thursday in Abuja, confirming the university’s recognition and readiness to begin its journey in the higher education sector.
Governor Nwifuru expressed that the university, which was initially proclaimed in 2021, is a significant milestone for the state, designed to provide greater access to quality and affordable tertiary education. He highlighted that the university would address both the state’s and the nation’s growing technological manpower needs, especially in an era increasingly defined by technological advancements.
“We are committed to adequate funding for the sustainability of this institution,” stated Governor Nwifuru. He assured that his administration would ensure continuous financial support for the university’s development. The government has already made substantial investments in key campus infrastructure, including the Senate Building, student hostels, faculty buildings, and the university library, which are all in varying stages of completion.
The NUC has also stipulated that the university will only begin academic activities after a full resource verification. Ribadu explained that the verification process would assess the state of the institution’s infrastructure, staffing, and academic facilities before allowing the official commencement of classes.
Governor Nwifuru further shared plans for the state’s manpower development strategy, including a scholarship program designed to train over 1,000 students in local and international institutions for advanced degrees. The goal is to foster a new generation of academic staff who will contribute to the university’s growth and overall human capital development in the state.
