The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward eliminating the disparity between Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor’s degrees in Nigeria. A bill addressing this long-standing issue passed its second reading on Tuesday, receiving unanimous support from lawmakers.
Sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Fuad Laguda, Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Technical Education, the bill aims to amend the Federal Polytechnics Act. The proposed amendment seeks to redefine the role of polytechnics in Nigeria and promote technical education.
During the debate, Hon. Laguda emphasized the need for a uniform qualification structure that allows polytechnic graduates to compete on equal footing with their university counterparts. The bill proposes replacing HND certifications with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree, ensuring better career opportunities for graduates.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Abbas highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between university and polytechnic graduates, stressing that the reform aligns with global trends in technical education.
Following its approval for the second reading, the bill has been referred to the House Committee on Polytechnics and Higher Education for further deliberation.
Meanwhile, the House also passed another bill seeking to establish a Legislative Security Directorate within the National Assembly. The proposal outlines the qualifications and responsibilities of personnel, including the Sergeant-at-Arms, to enhance security operations.
