The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has dismissed reports suggesting the introduction of a resit examination for candidates in Nigeria. According to findings by The Positive Voice, the alleged resit exam is not intended for Nigerian candidates but originates from WAEC Ghana and is exclusive to candidates in that country.
The misinformation arose from a viral report quoting John Kapi, identified as WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs. However, The Positive Voice confirms that Kapi is a Ghanaian official working in WAEC’s Ghana office, and the details do not apply to Nigeria.
Understanding WAEC’s Examination Calendar in Nigeria
WAEC Nigeria clarified its existing structure for administering examinations. Since 2017, the council has been conducting a first series of exams for private candidates, typically scheduled between February and March each year. This innovation, introduced under the leadership of former Head of National Office (HNO) Mr. Olu Adenipekun, is separate from the other two well-established examination windows:
1. May/June WASSCE – for school-based candidates.
2. November/December WASSCE – for private candidates (formerly known as GCE).
The current HNO, Dr. Amos Dangut, has upheld this structure, which continues to provide candidates with three distinct opportunities annually.
Clarification from WAEC Nigeria
WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, debunked the resit claims, labeling the reports as misleading. She assured Nigerians that the council has no plans to introduce such a format.
“The first series of the WASSCE for private candidates, which has been ongoing for several years, remains unchanged. This year’s edition is scheduled for February and March, as always,” Mrs. Adesina stated.
