The Oyo State Government has officially commenced the disbursement of bursary payments to 2,950 students across various higher institutions in Nigeria. This initiative, approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, is aimed at supporting students in Law Schools, Medical and Clinical Schools, Aviation Schools, as well as final-year students in universities and polytechnics.
The bursary, totaling N554,989,000, was allocated after a thorough selection process. Over 3,000 students initially applied, but only those who met the eligibility criteria were considered. The Senior Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs, Victor Olojede, announced the commencement of payments in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan.
Among the 2,950 students benefiting from the bursary:
– 105 are Medical and Clinical students
– 4 are from Maritime and Aviation Schools
– The rest are final-year students from universities and polytechnics
Olojede emphasized that Governor Makinde’s administration is committed to prioritizing student welfare, adding that previous governments failed to provide bursary and scholarship opportunities.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Scholarship Board, Olawale Atilola, described the bursary as a reflection of the governor’s investment in education. He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely for essential academic needs, such as books and tuition fees.
Several beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the financial support, acknowledging its impact on their education.
Yetunde Ayoola, a recipient, noted that she had never been eligible for scholarships due to age restrictions but qualified for this bursary as an indigene of Oyo State.
Another beneficiary, Akanbi Mayowa, explained that the bursary would help him settle his final-year tuition, reducing his financial struggles. Similarly, a Medical student from the University of Ibadan emphasized how timely the bursary was, especially for covering final-year and induction fees.
